Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, chronicles the lives of teen poets from seven cities around the nation as they prepare to compete in Youth Speaks’ annual Brave New Voices Festival.
Brave New Voices is a monumental festival that features teen poetry slam champions from cities, rural, and suburban areas from all over the world. Held in a different city each year, Brave New Voices has taken place at esteemed venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, The San Francisco Opera House, The Apollo Theater, and the Chicago Theater, drawing thousands of audiences each year.
Beginning April 5th at 11PM, follow America’s brightest young talents as they strive to reach the pinnacle of slam poetry. Sharing their most personal thoughts and emotions as they face inner battles, family tragedy, and the pressures of competition, these poets use words open minds and explore possibilities. Narrated by Queen Latifah, Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, airs every Sunday at 11PM.
This is Robert B im on the bnv kansas city team and im just so glad the bnv 08 family is being showcased on hbo next week though i wish we knew a little more is it just the finalists and semi-finalists, a little bit of everyone, or just the teams who were followed by the cameras. I really wish we knew!

Overdose
I strongly oppose the overdose of the human race
This disgrace is all too commonplace in an effort to control the populace
Are we in such a deep state of hypnosis?
To accept all of these misdiagnosis
and possible prognosis..
affecting our psychosis
Lets end the dispose of the prematurely comatose
This I purpose before I decompose
To administer ritalin into children should be a sin
If everyone knew its origin..
would they still accept insulin?
At one time to vaccinate meant to eliminate
So who can claim its not still the same?
How do we comprehend, defend, or reccomend this trend ?
Nurses, although many have hearts that are tender
are often taught to be like that of “the great pretender”
Doctors prescribe drugs they do not know much about
For us to “try out”- if there is a bad “turn out”
be prepared to question that doctors “whereabout”
There is an element which is lacking
That of sincerity
Including appreciation of individualization, integrity, & dignity
Which leads to depravity, needless fatality, and “premeditated complexity”
used as a “necessity” to protect identities
Consumer advocacy is labeled as “lunacy”
as the conspiracy of the pharmacy industry gains supremacy
OMG I <33 this show && believe in EVERYTHING that this stands for. I am a poet && was TRULY amazed && inspired by these wonderful fucking ppl. I would love to be involved && meet the freedom writers of the future. It wasnt just the 15 seconds of fame I was tranced by but the colours of there words as they painted pictures of discovery, lost, hurt, pain, culture, and justice. It not only made me understand, but maybe in those 5 minutes they finally understood themselves. Peace && love[Good luck to you all && may your work be the blessed of many daysz to come]

I just saw the show and i was so amazed at all the talented people…Some of the poems made tears come to my eyes.Growing up in the mean streets of New York poetry was my savior..And my 15 year old daughter has taken it to another level more deeper than i ever got .I just want to thank Russell and Mr Lathan for giving these kids of today a chance to speak their voice and be heard all over …How can i get information on how to get my daughter involved? Thankyou

I though I was a great/good poet until I caught the 2 part series on HBO, I am Blown away and these young people MORE than Raise the Bar! I Thank GOD there are programs like this for these Beautiful Youth.

i loved the show it was very informing and powerful to see so many people come together to support each other and do something alot of people wont understand. I write poetry but when i write its jus on paper but when i seen the show i was like how can i be apart of something so powerful. I live in jacksonville and the closest group to me ft.laderdale. Is it possible to have a group in jacksonville florida if so what would i have to do to be apart of it or make a group. plz write back
i love this show! i love poetry and the way these kids vibe and flow, its amazing. i’m a teen writer myself and draw inspiration from all these people, especially b yung ;] HOPE I CAN BE THERE NEXT YEAR!

wow! all i can say is wow!
the power of these poems is amazing and each one of them has touched me in some way. i feel like when i here a poem i weight is lifted off my shoulders which is wild because its like the poets pull out the words ive been tryin to pull out for years.
the teens on this show are so beautiful to me. it stumbled upon the show the other night, and kept watching because i am a writer, and a have been attempting to find the courage to perform in spoken word. but these teens stories effected me so much that i watched the entire series, three hours, i cried non stop. i just want to say, i am so touched and blessed to have seen the passion expressed. thank you.
